This is The Jolly Inebriate.
We take a non-pretentious, slightly profane approach when it comes to reporting on booze, entertaining at home and the service industry. We like a challenge, we’re definitely DIY and we don’t think the idea of novelty is at odds with the classics. Whether it’s the latest trend in cocktails, a seasonal beer or the best sandwich you’ve ever had, we’re right there; up against the bar.
Life’s too short to not give a shit about what you eat and drink. Charles H. Baker Jr. said it best:
…all really interesting people–sportsman, explorers, musicians, scientists, vagabonds and writers–were vitally interested in good things to eat and drink; cared for exotic and intriguing ways of composing them. We soon discovered further that this keen interest was not solely through gluttony, the spur of hunger or merely to sustain life, but in a spirit of high adventure. (The Gentleman’s Companion)
My name’s Japhet Bower. I don’t work much in the field I went to school for (Art criticism and curation at OCAD) but my degree left with me a love of writing, an appreciation for the finer things in life and an irrational fear of white boxes.
After a stint at blogTO, where I covered sex, music and culture, I decided I wanted to write about all of the good stuff I was drinking and eating around the city. As well as little ol’ me, Ryan McVittie, a veteran of the bar scene in Toronto, will occasionally pop by to provide an in-depth look at classic cocktails and share some of his recipes.

(That’s me, the red-eyed cowboy in the middle.)
